Yes, I know, I know, Kubecon Europe has just finished, but Kubecon North America is only about 200 days away. This time it’s in my back yard (well kind of) - Salt Lake City Utah, the home of Venafi, and cert-manager.
Not only is this an Olympic year (as you know, Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Olympics), it’s also the 10 year anniversary of Kubernetes!
So if you’re only just working out if you want to join us for the event, I’ve put together a short travel guide, which takes you through my favorite things to do in the City (note this encompasses Salt Lake City and Park City which is about 45 mins drive from the center of town):
1. The great outdoors
Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics in 2002 and although it’s going to be slightly early for skiing, there are salt flats to see, hikes to go on, climbing and biking trails that are world class! Learn more about outdoor activities in Salt Lake City here.
2. Banksy and Sundance!
Salt Lake hosts the Sundance film festival every year, and is a home to the Egyptian theater which hosts a bunch of shows. Banksy has obviously spent a lot of time here, as you can see three unique pieces of work dotted around the city.
3. Thriving food scene
I’ve had many fantastic dinners in Salt Lake. If you like sushi, my personal favorite is Takashi Sushi, honestly some of the best I’ve ever had, apparently because Salt Lake city airport is a hub for fresh fish transport. A fun place for tacos is Roctaco, there’s good italian at Caffe Molise, and for a good all round American bar/restaurant, you have White Horse (also at the airport for your pre-boarding pint).
4. Yes you can drink (awesomely)
For a state that’s not so well known for its alcohol consumption, Salt Lake actually has some pretty great places to go! For grape, there is an incredible place to get a huge variety of excellent wine by the glass called BTG Wine Bar. For grain, there’s a world class distillery called High West, a cult favourite whiskey on the London bar scene (tasting room in Park City). For the usual selection of beers and burgers, the Venafi local is The Green Pig Pub and you get some good cocktails just around the corner at Bar X. NOTE! Remember to take your ID (passport if you’re from abroad), as you will certainly be asked for it, now matter how young you look! Even I get ID’d.
5. Pioneer heritage
As the home of the Latter Day Saint movement, you’d be remiss not to go and take a look at the impressive Salt Lake Temple. If you’d like to find out more, you could check out the Pioneer Memorial Museum, which has an immaculate steam powered fire engine from 1902
6. Impressive stays
All of the hotels are pretty close to the city centre. Park city would be too far to travel into every day. My favourite all round hotel is the Hyatt Regency downtown. If you’re not on a budget you could stay at The Grand America. Outside of that there are plenty of reasonable options.
Visit Venafi on our home turf
Venafi has a huge central office in town, and we plans to do workshops, guided tours and events, so if you’d like to learn more about our plans, and get special early access, please sign up here for updates.
I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City!
