Never heard of fastsecure? No worries. The term was just hatched this morning in Venafi CEO Jeff Hudson’s keynote at Machine Identity Management Global Summit 2021. Simply put, fastsecure is the uniting of speed and security into a single force that can enable ever greater levels of secure digital transformation. After Jeff’s keynote, fastsecure quickly became a buzzword among attendees at this year’s Global Summit. So let’s explore what it means for your machine identities.

So, what is fastsecure?
Let’s start at the beginning. Machines are everywhere. And they are no longer just the old-school boxes that we had to manage and protect back in the day. They are applications and APIs and containers and software of many kinds. In today’s digital world, our businesses rely on all these types of machines. And we’re going to have a lot of them.
For our businesses to move ahead speedily and safely into this bright new future, all of these machines need to have an identity. And we need to be able to trust that identity, virtually on the fly. So, we’re going to have to find new ways to manage the thousands of new machine identities that are created, deployed, and ultimately destroyed every day, hour or even minute to support rapid development efforts.
Many times in the past, we have had to make difficult choices to try to balance the speed of development against the need for security. We had to keep connections and communications between machines safe. But we also had to support the competitive advantages that result from speed of development.
Simply put, developers don’t have time to wait around for laborious, manual processes for requesting and deploying machine identities. By the same token, InfoSec teams need to uphold the high standards of security that digital transformation requires. And these security professionals can’t afford for developers to bypass security policies or take shortcuts that could leave the business exposed.
That’s where fastsecure comes into play. It’s a new mindset that embraces both speed and security. It’s open source, it’s a connected technology ecosystem, it’s security made easy to use and easy to enforce, and so much more. It bridges the communications gap between DevOps and security.
So, you can actually have it all when it comes to machine identity management—accelerating your business, automating for efficiency and fostering innovation where you need it most. This is an exciting new way of thinking about machine identity management. And we’ll continue to explore it in this blog.
